Two new Pueblo West Metropolitan Board of Directors members take oaths of office

New Pueblo West Metro District Board members, Brian Axworthy and Bill Vickers

Brian Axworthy and Bill Vickers, who were elected to the Pueblo West Metropolitan District Board of Directors on May 2, took their oaths of office Monday, May 22, beginning their four-year term on the Board.

The Board of Directors is a five-member governing body tasked with oversight of the Metro District. Unlike municipalities, Pueblo West is a quasi-municipal special district that is authorized to provide four services to residents – limited covenant enforcement, fire protection, parks and recreation, and water and wastewater utilities. The Board is elected by registered voters consisting of Pueblo West residents and property owners.

Vickers is now serving in his third stint on the Board of Directors. He served from 2008 to 2009, and again from 2011 to 2014. Vickers was most recently a member of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District Committee of Architecture. He has lived in Pueblo West since 1995.

“I would like to thank Pueblo West voters for placing their confidence in me to represent them,” Vickers said. “My goal is to address their concerns on water supply, water rates, responsible growth, and conducting Board of Directors meetings in a more accessible way.”

Axworthy is currently the supervisor of the Pueblo County School District 70 Nutrition Services program. He and his family have lived on the north side of Pueblo West since 2011. He has never held elected office.

“I am honored to have been chosen to be a Board member and work with our community on some decisive and actionable measures,” Axworthy said. “If the Metro Board and staff all work together cooperatively and collaborate with Pueblo County, we’ll see some amazing progress for our District.”

Six individuals ran for two open positions in the May 2 election. The final vote totals were as follows:

  • Bill Vickers — 1,868
  • Brian Axworthy — 1,309
  • Greg Roberts — 1,257
  • Brian Lucas — 1,250
  • Kenneth Murry — 958
  • Robert Karasawa — 933

Axworthy and Vickers replace outgoing directors, Jami Baker-Orr and Kim Swearingen. Neither sought re-election.
